Why are quality inspections so important for fresh produce?

First of all, vegetables and fruits that are imported into the European Union (EU) must comply with the quality standards of the EU. To verify this, IFQS conducts fresh produce quality inspections. This provides you with a clear report on the quality of your goods upon arrival, maps out the influence of transportation on the quality, and allows you to accurately communicate the quality of the goods to your customers upon delivery. The quality of fresh produce can be assessed based on general standards, specific trade standards as laid down in EU legislation, and customer specifications.

How does IFQS inspect the quality of fresh produce?

IFQS inspects the quality of fresh produce by a combination of visual inspection and laboratory tests, two common methods used to assess the quality of fruits and vegetables. In addition, physical tests and checks on packaging are also part of our expertise.

About our quality inspections.

During the visual inspection, first impressions are very important. Are the fresh products intact? Is there no mold on them? Do the products look "fresh"? Our quality inspectors also inspect the fresh produce for their external and internal product quality, considering factors such as appearance, size, color, texture, and other characteristics that are important for quality. Specific guidelines and standards established by government agencies, industry organizations, and customers are used in this process. In addition, the label on the box and pallet are also carefully inspected for any deviations.

Physical tests can be performed to measure the structure and hardness of the product using penetrometers. We also look at things like the thickness of the skin and the amount of juice the fruit contains. A temperature data logger then tells us exactly at what temperature the fresh products have been stored. Additionally, we use a so-called BRIX meter to measure the sugar content and a dry matter meter to determine the oil content in the skin of the product, which determines how nicely a product ripens. In short, measuring is knowing!

IFQS, if necessary, commissions various external laboratory tests to determine the quality of vegetables and fruits. This may include tests for residues of pesticides, microbiological tests, tests for nutritional value, and ripeness tests.

Ons team van kwaliteitscontroleurs kan ook de verpakking van versproducten controleren om ervoor te zorgen dat deze voldoet aan de normen en richtlijnen voor voedselveiligheid en kwaliteit.

If a product does not meet the quality requirements after various tests, we will inform you about the found deviations in our transparent report and advise you on a suitable solution.

Our team is ready for you.
